I managed to make a very crude bodkin!

This was inspired by kviljo on primitive archer. He's new to blacksmithing too but has been making some amazing stuff. I can't get a link to the thread to work, but if you go to http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php click english warbow then 'my first bodkins' you'll see it.

Yes it will be good enough and I'm sure I could make better ones if I practice. I made it because I need a bodkin to make a John Holder arrow which are £5.50 a time.
My forge (made out of bricks), anvil (a scrap of iron) and raw material cost a total of £5. The most expensive thing is the charcoal which costs about £1 per bodkin.

Thanks Gavin. It's nothing compared to what Kviljo has been doing ...really good bodkins, spearheads, daggers, candlesticks etc.

If your subsequent ones are as good as that one, then you won't go far wrong! Top job. Be nice to see an outswept swallowtail head!

ha ha ha ha that would be a long way off, if at all Gavin. I'm sure I'm driving the neighbours crazy with all the banging required for a simple bodkin.

Nice one , at least you are doing something positive, instead of some of these people who have their stereos on full blast! Set up your own armourer's forge...that would be great!

It´s good. Only the temperature (temperature forging) was too low. Therefore, the broken tip and the forging-wrinkles.
I would advise you to provide a picture of incandescent colors. For each major type of steel, there is a separate review panel.
I hope my English is understandable
Bernhard
